A girl kneels holding her cupped hands to her chest before performing the traditional Thai wai or greeting. The wai is a highly important reciprocal sign of courtesy. Hands are cupped together and the head is lowered while saying Sawasdee Khap, meaning hello. I have worked on small figurines to decorate the spirit house, which in Thailand is believed to house the guardian spirit of each home. I was wondering that if I could work on a figurine that is slightly bigger than the ones used for the spirit house, what position and expression should this figurine have? recalls Duangkamol. I remembered that our wai greeting has become recognized by people all around the world, and this is how I came to be inspired to create this little celadon girl wearing a Thai traditional costume.
