A modern depiction of ancestral artistry, ceremonial masks such as these are used by the Akans in Ghana, the Yoruba in Nigeria and the Vogan in Togo. Kola Ogunsunlade Joseph creates the evocative assemblage in a dramatic resurrection of materials. Utilizing metal plates and found objects, the university-trained sculptor forms the piece with arc welding materials and finishes it with clear varnish in a dramatic piece of undeniable beauty.
