Lines, angles, and contours blend in visual harmony on this stunning sese wood mask by Daniel Nyadedzor. Hammered aluminum plates embellish the forehead andcheeks in this fine example of Baule art. Baoule art is recognized for its elegant forms and exceptional craftsmanship. This ritual mask is an adaptation of a traditional mask used for ceremonial dances. In the profoundly ritualistic and mystical Baule culture only men wear masks that are otherwise stored in a sacred shed away from the village. Offerings of food or palm wine are made here, and sometimes the men will gather to sing in honor of their gods without putting on the masks.
